BasiGo Secures $42 Million to Drive Electric Bus Expansion in East Africa

BasiGo, a company that’s reshaping public transport with electric bus solutions across sub-Saharan Africa, has just closed a $42 million funding round. The capital includes $24 million in Series A equity and $17.5 million in debt facilities from British International Investment (BII) and the United States Development Finance Corporation (DFC).

Africa50, a pan-African infrastructure investor, led the equity funding, with backing from Novastar Ventures, CFAO Kenya, Mobility54, and others. With this funding in place, BasiGo will now roll out 1,000 electric buses in East Africa over the next three years, starting with Kenya and Rwanda, where over 300 bus operators have already signed up for their buses.

The funds will be put to work expanding BasiGo’s manufacturing capabilities at their assembly line in Kenya Vehicle Manufacturers. This Thika-based facility, which opened in 2024, is Kenya’s first specialized electric bus assembly line.

CEO Jit Bhattacharya emphasized that this combined investment validates BasiGo’s mission and will accelerate the company’s push to scale up operations. “With the backing of BII and other investors, we’re ready to deploy hundreds of electric buses and drive the shift to clean mobility across East Africa,” he said.

The funding will also help expand BasiGo’s Pay-As-You-Drive model, which allows businesses to switch to electric buses without huge upfront costs. On top of that, BasiGo will continue to develop its tech platforms like Jani, which makes bus services smoother and more convenient for passengers.

Over the last year, BasiGo has been at the forefront of funding rounds to support electric bus assembly, secure bus production, and boost electric charging infrastructure across East Africa. With this new round of investment, the company is poised to make even bigger strides in creating sustainable transport solutions.
