Ampersand, a leader in electric vehicle (EV) energy technology in Africa, has introduced a major update to its flagship product. The company’s well-known electric motorcycles, which were previously branded as Ampersand, now have a new name: Alpha. This rebranding marks an exciting new phase, setting the motorcycles apart from the company’s other ventures in energy tech and battery swap stations. The new Alpha brand pays tribute to the bike’s role as Africa’s first commercial electric motorcycle. At the same time, it helps Ampersand clarify its growing focus on energy systems and infrastructure that power the bikes and other electric vehicles. In short, Alpha will now stand as its own identity, allowing the motorcycle to shine while Ampersand focuses on expanding its EV energy solutions.
Ampersand has come a long way since it launched as Africa’s first electric mobility startup. Today, the company powers over 5,700 electric motorcycles that together travel close to 950,000 kilometers every day, the same as driving from South Africa to Egypt and back more than 100 times daily. These motorcycles are not just eco-friendly; they’re also changing lives by helping riders save money, improving air quality in cities, and making public health a priority. The new Alpha brand continues that mission. It shows that Ampersand is still focused on giving riders access to the best electric motorcycles on the market, while also working behind the scenes to provide clean and dependable energy for a growing network of transport partners.
What’s even more impressive is how popular these bikes are among riders. In Rwanda, 9 out of 10 motorcyclists prefer Alpha bikes over competitors, including global brands with more money to spend. Why? Riders point to Alpha’s reliability, longer battery range, and huge savings on fuel and maintenance. These features make a real difference for everyday users who depend on their bikes to make a living. Independent tests have backed up these claims. Compared to other electric motorcycles on the market, Alpha bikes can run up to 40% longer before needing maintenance. That’s a major benefit for riders navigating the tough roads of Rwanda and Kenya. Plus, Alpha’s rider loyalty is unmatched over 98% of riders stick with the brand, and many of them go on to recommend the bikes to friends and fellow drivers. Some even become brand ambassadors because they’re so happy with the product.
The launch of Alpha is more than a name change. It’s a bold step forward that reflects Ampersand’s growth, its commitment to sustainability, and its deep connection with African riders. As Ampersand continues to expand its energy tech, Alpha is set to lead the way in clean, affordable, and dependable transport across the continent.
