To enhance Nigeria’s grain processing capabilities, Bühler’s GPIC in Kano is launching specialized training programs focusing on rice milling and optical sorting technologies. Scheduled from May 12 to 15, 2025, at the GPIC facility in Kano State, these courses are designed for individuals and businesses engaged in Nigeria’s grain processing industry and across Africa.
Developed in collaboration with the World Food Programme (WFP) and the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ), the training offers both beginner and advanced levels. The curriculum encompasses the “Fundamentals of Rice Milling” and “Optical Sorting” training across Levels 1, 2, and 3, building upon previous initiatives that have trained over 60 rice millers. The courses aim to address Nigeria’s reliance on imported grain and food products, which have contributed to negative trade balances, high inflation, weakened local currencies, and forex shortages. By capitalizing on Nigeria’s arable land and abundant local grains, the training seeks to enhance local grain processing capabilities, thereby improving food security and creating export opportunities.
Participants will benefit from a comprehensive curriculum that combines theoretical instruction with hands-on sessions using modern equipment. Key learning areas include
- Understanding paddy characteristics and quality parameters
- Executing pre-cleaning operations
- Managing the parboiling process
- Performing hulling and husk separation
- Applying whitening processes and technology
- Conducting routine maintenance of destoners, whiteners, polishers, and hullers
- Implementing the Sortex process and technology
The course fee includes an invitation letter for visa applications (if applicable), hands-on access to the latest rice milling machines, training materials, lunch, and a certificate upon completion.
Thomas Ogundiran, Managing Director of Bühler Nigeria, emphasized the significance of the GPIC and the impact of these new courses on the grain processing industry. He stated, “By promoting education and skill development, we contribute to food security and the sustainability and profitability of food production in Nigeria and Africa.” Mustafa Rajab, head of the GPIC, highlighted the milestone represented by the introduction of these advanced courses. He noted, “We are committed to driving innovation in grain processing and supporting the growth of this industry in Nigeria and Africa.”
The GPIC, established as a research and development center, is dedicated to uncovering the potential of local grains in Nigeria and Africa. It aims to bridge technological gaps in local grain processing and support customers in developing safe and affordable food using local grains. This initiative is expected to advance industrialization and local food production, providing practical and impactful education to individuals and companies dedicated to improving food security and economic prosperity in the region
