DStv Decoder Price Drop: Multichoice Nigeria's Latest Move to Retain Customers

Multichoice Nigeria has slashed the price of its DStv decoder by 50%, reducing it from N20,000 to N10,000, in an effort to attract new customers and retain its current clientele.

Additionally, the company is providing a complimentary upgrade to the next tier of the DStv package for customers who settle their existing subscription in full between June 16 and July 31, 2025. This initiative follows a significant loss of 1.4 million subscribers experienced by Multichoice Nigeria from March 2023 to March 2025, which the company attributes to the economic challenges faced by Nigerians.

The Offer Details and Packages

MultiChoice Nigeria has launched a new promotional initiative called the “We’ve Got You” offer, aimed at rewarding loyal customers while also attracting new subscribers. This offer provides an automatic upgrade to a higher package for all active and returning subscribers who renew their subscriptions during the promotional period. With this upgrade, subscribers will enjoy access to a wider variety of channels and content, including movies, drama series, children’s programmes, and news.

According to John Ugbe, the Chief Executive Officer of MultiChoice Nigeria, the offer is a way of recognising customer loyalty and delivering greater value to subscribers. By enhancing access to premium content at no additional cost, MultiChoice hopes to enrich the viewing experience of its customers.

Currently, DStv offers several subscription packages in Nigeria, each tailored to different content preferences and budgets. The DStv Padi package, priced at ₦3,600 per month, offers over 45 channels, mainly consisting of local and international content. DStv Yanga, at ₦6,000 per month, includes more than 85 channels, featuring 7 high-definition (HD) channels and 24 audio channels. The DStv Confam package, costing ₦11,000 per month, gives access to over 105 channels, with 10 in HD and 11 audio channels.

Moving up the tiers, DStv Compact is priced at ₦19,000 per month and provides over 130 channels, including 20 HD channels and 53 audio channels. DStv Compact Plus, at ₦30,000 per month, offers more than 145 channels, with 30 in HD and 53 audio channels. At the top of the range is DStv Premium, which costs ₦44,500 per month and features over 160 channels, including 38 HD channels and 53 audio channels.

Impact and Future Prospects

The anticipated impact of this initiative is considerable, as it seeks to promote content discovery across a broader spectrum of genres and to reestablish DStv as a platform that provides daily value. With Nigeria representing 77% of the subscriber decline noted in Multichoice’s Rest of Africa (RoA) operations from 2023 to 2025, the company aims to reverse this trend and recover its market share. Reports indicate that the RoA experienced a total loss of 1.8 million subscribers over the two-year period, reducing the total subscriber count to 7.5 million in 2025, down from 9.3 million in 2023.

The decision by Multichoice Nigeria to reduce the price of the DStv decoder and to provide complimentary subscription upgrades is a strategic initiative designed to attract new customers while retaining current ones. The company’s strategy to reposition itself as a provider of daily value and to foster content discovery across a wider range of genres is expected to produce favorable outcomes. Nevertheless, the company continues to encounter significant obstacles in the Nigerian market, and it remains uncertain how effective this strategy will prove to be over time.
