Flutterwave, a leading African fintech company, has officially launched its remittance platform, Send App, in Malawi. This move marks a significant step in expanding the availability of cross-border money transfers across East Africa.
The commercial launch follows the International Money Transfer Operators (IMTO) licence granted to Flutterwave by the Reserve Bank of Malawi in October 2023. Now, Send App users in Malawi can enjoy seamless money transfers, competitive exchange rates, and access to Flutterwave’s world-class security systems. The app supports transfers in 150 currencies, further solidifying its global reach.
The Send App, which underwent a rebranding in August 2023, enables Malawians to receive money from abroad using both mobile and web platforms. This development is particularly beneficial for the Malawian diaspora, allowing them to send money home securely and efficiently.
Olugbenga ‘GB’ Agboola, CEO and founder of Flutterwave, expressed excitement about the launch, saying, “Send App’s commercial availability in Malawi strengthens our mission to provide seamless and secure remittance services for Malawians at home and abroad.”
Lumbani Gondwe, Flutterwave’s Country Manager for Malawi, added that the company aims to enhance the platform further by integrating additional features like Mobile Money and Cash Pickup options to ensure accessibility and convenience.
In addition to Malawi, Flutterwave has extended its services to Uganda, having secured a Payment Systems Operator (PSO) licence from the Bank of Uganda in August 2024. This enables businesses in Uganda to conduct single and bulk transactions and allows Ugandans living abroad to send money back home.
Flutterwave’s growing presence in East Africa reflects its commitment to leveraging fintech solutions to address key financial needs across the continent. With the digital payments market in Malawi expected to grow from $3.52 billion in 2024 to $6.87 billion by 2028, Flutterwave’s timely launch positions the company for significant growth in the region.
