In a significant move that showcases growing economic and healthcare collaboration, Indian conglomerate Padiyath Healthcare has announced plans to invest $100 million in Nigeria’s medical sector. The announcement, made during Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to Nigeria, signals a bold step toward modernizing healthcare infrastructure in Africa’s largest economy.
Transforming Nigeria’s Healthcare Infrastructure
At the core of this investment is the Padiyath Mayfields Hospitals, a 300-bed tertiary care facility located in Suncity Estates, Galadimawa, Abuja. Expected to be Nigeria’s largest private-sector hospital, the project promises state-of-the-art medical services and advanced diagnostic technologies.
According to Hazeeb Rahman Padiyath, chairman of Padiyath Healthcare, the facility will feature pioneering equipment, including a 3T MRI scanner and a 256-slice CT machine, both of which will be firsts for West Africa. The hospital will also boast a cardiac catheterization lab, a 25-bed intensive care unit, and an emergency department equipped with its own operating theater for rapid response to critical cases. Additionally, a modern operating theater complex will be located on the third floor, enhancing the hospital’s capacity for handling emergencies.
Scheduled for commissioning in February 2025, Padiyath Mayfields Hospitals is set to redefine private healthcare standards in Nigeria.
Complementing its flagship hospital, Padiyath Healthcare will also establish Padiyath Cancare Hospitals, a 200-bed cancer institute in Abuja. This facility will focus exclusively on oncology, providing advanced cancer diagnostics and treatment.
The hospital will be equipped with cutting-edge technology, including PET scanners, linear accelerators, and gamma knife systems, ensuring comprehensive care for cancer patients. The initiative is aimed at curbing the rising incidence of cancer in Nigeria, offering affordable and accessible care locally.
“Our vision is to bring world-class healthcare to Africa, starting with Nigeria,” said Hazeeb Rahman Padiyath. “These hospitals will not only elevate healthcare standards but also reduce the need for Nigerians to seek medical treatment abroad.”
Strengthening Bilateral Relations Between Nigeria and India
This ambitious investment is part of broader efforts to deepen India-Nigeria relations. Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit underscored healthcare as a pivotal area of collaboration between the two nations. By leveraging India’s expertise in medical technology and healthcare management, this partnership aims to drive innovation and capacity building in Nigeria.
As Africa’s most populous nation and a growing economic powerhouse, Nigeria offers a compelling opportunity for transformative investments in its healthcare sector. Padiyath Healthcare’s commitment sets a benchmark for future private-sector initiatives, showcasing the potential for impactful partnerships that address critical developmental needs.
