Ile-Ife, Nigeria – In a major stride towards enhancing STEM education and fostering technological innovation in Nigeria, Moniepoint, in partnership with its co-founder Tosin Eniolorunda, has made a significant contribution to the Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU) with the unveiling of the Tosin Eniolorunda Computer-Aided Design (CAD) and Computer-Aided Manufacturing (CAM) Laboratory. This move is aimed at positioning Nigeria’s youth to thrive in science and engineering fields, and ultimately boosting the country’s socio-economic development.

This was shared with Business Verge by representatives of Moniepoint. The unveiling ceremony also attracted high-profile guests, including university officials, industry stakeholders, and representatives from the Osun State government.

The state-of-the-art lab, located in the Mechanical Engineering Department of OAU, is designed to offer students practical exposure to cutting-edge technologies, including CAD/CAM systems, and bridges the gap between classroom theory and real-world applications. The project, in line with Moniepoint’s corporate social responsibility agenda, signals the company’s commitment to empowering future generations through STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) education.

Speaking at the commissioning ceremony, OAU’s Vice-Chancellor, Professor Adebayo Bamire, expressed the university’s deep appreciation for the laboratory, noting its timely arrival amid the institution’s infrastructural challenges. “This laboratory will not only enhance learning but also strengthen collaboration between academia and industry, helping students and staff engage in more innovative research,” said Bamire.

Moniepoint’s investment comes at a crucial time when Nigeria, like much of Africa, faces a gap in STEM participation despite a growing young population. Reports show that less than 25% of African students currently pursue careers in STEM-related fields. With over 60% of Africa’s population under 25, the push for more investments in STEM is seen as critical to driving socio-economic progress.

Tosin Eniolorunda, an alumnus of OAU’s Mechanical Engineering Department and co-founder of Moniepoint, explained the deeper purpose behind the donation. “This lab represents more than just an upgrade; it’s about fostering a new generation of engineers and innovators who will shape Nigeria’s future. By investing in STEM education, we’re building a pipeline of talent that will drive the country’s economic growth,” he said.

The laboratory’s upgrades include high-performance desktop computers, interactive learning boards, and sustainable power solutions, all aimed at enhancing students’ learning experiences. The lab also features advanced cooling systems and ergonomic furniture, creating an environment conducive to innovative thinking and hands-on learning.

The new lab will not only improve students’ skills in design and prototyping but will also increase their employability in the global job market. Professor Lasisi Umoru, Dean of the Faculty of Technology, emphasized that the facility will serve as a model for STEM education facilities across Nigeria. “This lab positions OAU as a leader in STEM education, and we’re excited about the future collaborations and innovations it will inspire,” he stated.

Moniepoint’s involvement in advancing STEM education is part of a broader vision to leverage technology for the socio-economic upliftment of Nigeria. The company has consistently been a leader in providing financial solutions, and its CSR initiatives aim to create lasting impacts in the communities it serves.
