MTN Nigeria Revises Data Prices After 200% Hike Controversy

MTN Nigeria has come under fire after confirming a 200% hike in its weekly data plan for 15GB. The price, which was previously ₦2,000, unexpectedly jumped to ₦6,000 on Monday, triggering outrage among subscribers.

The increase was initially denied by the telco, but after widespread complaints, MTN acknowledged the hike, calling it a mistake. In a public statement, the company addressed its customers, saying:

> “We know how upsetting it must have been to wake up to a 200% increase on your favourite digital bundle. We get it and admit it. Let’s just say na mistake.”

Confusion Over Promotional Pricing

While MTN later confirmed the increase, a representative had earlier stated that the ₦2,000 pricing was part of a promotional offer, and the plan was simply returning to its original rate. However, this explanation did little to ease customer frustration, as many felt blindsided by the sudden price change.

Following the backlash, the telco adjusted the plan, reverting to a 7GB bundle for ₦3,000 instead of the controversial 15GB for ₦6,000. However, MTN did not clarify whether the original plan would be reinstated or if the changes were permanent.

Tariff Hikes and Regulatory Pushback

The price adjustment comes amid ongoing discussions about tariff increases in Nigeria’s telecom industry. Telecom operators have been pushing for higher tariffs to offset rising operational costs, exacerbated by inflation and naira devaluation.

Despite these financial challenges, Nigerian lawmakers have opposed the hikes, arguing that telcos should focus on improving service quality rather than increasing costs for consumers. The recent incident with MTN further fuels concerns about transparency in the telecom sector and how pricing decisions impact millions of users.

For now, subscribers will have to wait for further clarity on MTN’s data bundle pricing, while industry stakeholders continue to debate the balance between business sustainability and consumer affordability.
