Nigeria has secured a 2,600-megawatt (MW) solar module supply agreement with LONGi Solar France SARL to power its Green Hydrogen Hub Project in the Liberty Oil & Gas Free Trade Zone, Akwa Ibom State.
This was announced by the Minister of Innovation, Science, and Technology, Uche Nnaji, marking one of the largest solar procurement deals in sub-Saharan Africa.
A Milestone in Renewable Energy
The deal aims to position Nigeria as a regional clean energy hub, leveraging its abundant solar resources for industrial growth, hydrogen exports, and clean mobility solutions.
According to the statement:
- The project will create over 20,000 direct jobs in engineering, logistics, research & development, and maintenance.
- It will support industrial-scale green hydrogen production, particularly for local industries, exports, and clean transport solutions in the marine and heavy transport sectors.
- Experts believe it will reduce Nigeria’s reliance on fossil fuels and drive economic diversification.
LONGi, a global leader in solar technology, is supplying its high-efficiency solar modules, optimized for Nigeria’s hot and humid climate, ensuring maximum energy yield and faster return on investment.
Boosting Nigeria’s Blue Economy & Healthcare
The impact of the project extends beyond energy:
- The Green Hydrogen Hub will integrate with Nigeria’s blue economy, supporting maritime logistics and offshore energy transitions.
- The facility will produce 500 metric tonnes of Green Medical Oxygen daily, significantly enhancing Nigeria’s healthcare capacity.
Strategic Move in the Global Energy Landscape
The deal strengthens Nigeria’s position in the global green hydrogen economy, bringing the country closer to some of the world’s largest solar projects, such as China’s 3,500MW Midong Solar Park.
This initiative aligns with the federal government’s push for renewable energy, industrialization, and job creation, setting the stage for long-term energy sustainability.
