NITDA Reports Google, Microsoft and TikTok Pay N2.55 Trillion in Taxes

The National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA) has announced that foreign digital companies operating in Nigeria, including global tech giants like Google, Microsoft, TikTok, and X (formerly Twitter), contributed a staggering N2.55 trillion in taxes during the first half of 2024.

This development, disclosed by NITDA’s Director of Corporate Communications and Media Relations, Hadiza Umar, is based on data from the Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS) and the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS). The agency highlighted this as a significant milestone in the government’s efforts to create a solid regulatory framework for the digital economy.

According to NITDA, the compliance of these tech companies with the Code of Practice for Interactive Computer Service Platforms/Internet Intermediaries has been instrumental in not only improving online safety but also driving tax revenue growth. The Code, jointly issued by the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC), National Broadcasting Commission (NBC), and NITDA, outlines specific guidelines for managing harmful online content and promoting safer digital spaces.

Tackling Harmful Content

As part of their compliance efforts, platforms such as Google, Microsoft, TikTok, and X removed over 65 million pieces of harmful content in 2023 following 4.1 million complaints from Nigerian users. Additionally, more than 12 million accounts were deactivated due to violations, while nearly 380,000 pieces of content were reinstated after successful user appeals.

NITDA commended these platforms for their responsiveness to user concerns, emphasising the importance of continued collaboration to address emerging challenges in the ever-evolving digital landscape.

“The 2023 compliance report underscores the platforms’ commitment to the Code of Practice and their community guidelines,” the agency said in a statement. “We are encouraged by their efforts and urge them to continue prioritising user safety and responsible content management.”

Promoting Digital Literacy

Beyond regulating content, NITDA is actively working to create a safer digital environment for Nigerians. Recently, the agency partnered with TikTok and Data Science Nigeria to launch the second phase of the #SaferTogether program. This initiative aims to equip parents, teachers, and guardians with tools to help young people safely navigate the digital world, particularly on platforms like TikTok.

Speaking on the partnership, TikTok’s Government Relations and Public Policy Director for Africa, Fortune Mgwili-Sibanda, highlighted the importance of collaboration. “Safety is a shared responsibility,” he said. “Through collective efforts, we can ensure safer digital spaces for everyone.”

Addressing Emerging Cyber Threats

NITDA also continues to raise awareness about cyber threats. Recently, it warned Nigerians about potential cyberattacks linked to Spotify, where threat actors use the platform to promote harmful links, pirated software, and malicious activities. The agency urged users to stay vigilant and adopt cybersecurity best practices to protect their information and devices.

Looking Ahead

NITDA remains committed to fostering a transparent and secure digital ecosystem. It believes the successes recorded so far are a testament to the effectiveness of Nigeria’s regulatory framework and the willingness of tech companies to collaborate.

“By working together, we can ensure that Nigeria’s digital economy thrives while prioritising safety, inclusivity, and innovation,” NITDA concluded.
