UK Unveils £1.9 Million Sankore Project to Boost Tech in Nigeria and Ghana

Business Verge| UK Unveils £1.9 Million Sankore Project to Boost Tech in Nigeria and Ghana

The United Kingdom has launched the £1.9 million Sankore project aimed at accelerating technological growth in Nigeria and Ghana. Announced by UK Minister for Africa, Lord Collins, the project seeks to foster partnerships with non-profit organizations and UN agencies across both nations to drive innovation.

Named after the historical West African centre of learning, the Sankore project will provide up to £1.9 million in funding to strengthen the tech ecosystems in these rapidly growing economies. This initiative is part of the UK-Africa Technology and Innovation Partnerships Programme, which aims to bolster science, technology, and innovation collaborations in West Africa.

The call for proposals invites non-profits and UN agencies to submit creative solutions that promote industry-science linkages and develop sustainable innovations. Nigeria’s Minister of Innovation, Science, and Technology, Uche Nnaji, highlighted the project’s potential to enhance Nigeria’s innovation landscape, noting that this partnership reflects a shared commitment to creating sustainable and inclusive growth.

The UK’s Deputy High Commissioner in Lagos, Jonny Baxter, reiterated that Sankore demonstrates the UK’s dedication to driving economic growth and innovation, with the project aiming to strengthen business partnerships and innovative solutions in priority sectors.

Sankore will complement other UK-backed initiatives such as FSD Africa, Manufacturing Africa, and MOBILIST, all aimed at fostering economic and private sector development across West Africa.

Organizations interested in participating have until 25th October 2024 to submit their proposals through the UK government’s official platform.
