The Lagos State Government is set to roll out an electronic call-up (e-call-up) system on the Lekki-Epe corridor starting September 23, 2024, following a reschedule from its initial launch date in August. The e-call-up system is expected to alleviate the chronic traffic congestion caused by the movement of articulated trucks along the corridor, which is home to major industrial players, including the Dangote Refinery.
The Lagos State Government has announced that the electronic call-up (e-call-up) system will take effect on the Lekki-Epe corridor starting September 23, 2024. This decision follows a postponement from the original August 1, 2024, rollout date.
The e-call-up system is a digital platform designed to regulate truck movements within the Lekki-Epe Free Trade Zone corridor, aiming to alleviate the severe congestion caused by articulated trucks. The system’s introduction is expected to help manage the increased truck traffic due to recent developments.
With Dangote Refinery beginning fuel distribution on September 15, the need for a streamlined logistics operation is more critical than ever. The refinery is expected to significantly increase the volume of trucks on the corridor, making the e-call-up system a timely and essential intervention.
This announcement was confirmed via the Lagos State Ministry of Transportation’s official X (formerly Twitter) account on Sunday. The statement explained that the e-call-up system is a crucial digital solution aimed at regulating truck traffic, reducing gridlock, and ensuring the smooth flow of goods within the Lekki-Epe Free Trade Zone.
The Lagos State Government highlighted that the new system is a step towards improving logistics operations, enhancing the quality of transportation infrastructure, and contributing to the region’s economic growth.
“In a significant move to avert severe congestion by articulated trucks and improve the efficiency of logistics operations within the Lekki-Epe Free Trade Zone corridor, the Lagos State Government has announced the commencement of the e-call-up system for managing truck movements within the axis from 23rd September 2024,” the statement read.
Important things to note
In preparation for the e-call-up system’s launch, the Lagos State Government has designated five holding parks for trucks:
– Hog Marketing Limited in Okorisan, Epe,
– Nilmage Two4Seven in Poka, Epe,
– Goldspeed Freight Agency Ltd. opposite Dangote Refinery,
– Diamond Star Ports and Terminal Ltd. in Abule Panu,
– Tal Concept Ltd. at HFP Brick Industry along Lekki-Epe Expressway.
These holding parks will help regulate truck movements and reduce the chance of congestion during peak hours. Additionally, the government will enforce a ban on truck movements during peak traffic periods (5 a.m. to 9 a.m. and 6 p.m. to 10 p.m.) to further ensure that the corridor remains as free-flowing as possible.
The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA), in conjunction with the Police and Taskforce, will oversee compliance and enforce the regulations associated with the e-call-up system.
